AC Joint Dislocation

The joint between the outer end of the Clavicle (Collarbone) and Acromion can be disrupted following an injury. This is usually in the form of a fall onto the point of the shoulder or an outstretched hand, or occasionally a direct blow onto the shoulder.
the extent of injury to the ligaments and surrounding structures determines the severity of the injury from Grade1-6.
Treatment

Grades 1-3 can be treated with rest, ice, painkillers and physiotherapy. However in some patients with Grade 3 injury surgery may be needed if pain and/or weakness in overhead activities persists after 2-3months.

Grade 4-6 need surgery to stabilise the AC joint using a Coracoclavicular stabilisation.
